Feast Portland’s Sandwich Invitational Recap
I love sandwiches. It doesn’t matter if they have roast beef or tempeh on them, sandwiches are easily my most favorite food. I love sandwiches more than Joey from “Friends” loves them (and that may be the only time I mention “Friends” on this blog). So, it’d make sense that I’d go to Feast Portland’s Sandwich Invitational. I know, Feast Portland was almost two months ago, but whatever. If you want to read about some delicious sandwiches from great restaurants in the Portland area, then read on!
I began my trek over to Director Park with my coworker and foodie PR extraordinaire, Helen Baldus, shortly after work on a Thursday. We made a stop over at Jake’s Bar & Grill to meet with Chandra Ram of Plate Magazine and share some great stories over some drinks. Since I’m new to the restaurant PR industry, I found the stories between journalist and PR to be fascinating. Shortly after that, the three of us made a short jaunt over to Director Park where we met with Greg Hall of Virtue Cider before I separated to get my sandwich on.
I started with the familiar Kenny and Zuke’s pastrami reuben, which is one of my favorite sandwiches in Portland. The flavor of the cured meat pairs well with the Russian dressing and sauerkraut. There was a long line for the sandwiches at Podnah’s Pit and I’ve heard good things about that place, so I knew that was the next sandwich I’d have to eat. Wow, that was a good sandwich. This sandwich is pure comfort food decadence with a proper marriage of roast beef and melted cheesy goodness, slightly resembling nacho cheese.
Jason French’s shrimp tea sandwiches were an interesting change of pace that I found to be subtle in delivery compared to most of the sandwiches full of rich, bold flavors. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the sandwich from Beast because I thought it was a little too dry for my palate, but it was the award winner of the night, so maybe I just had a bad sandwich. Foreign and Domestic had one of the largest sandwiches of the whole night with pork belly and all kinds of other good stuff on it. Truth be told, by the this time of the night, I met so many people and had so many sandwiches that I couldn’t keep with all of the ingredients in the latter sandwiches I ate.
Feast Portland’s Sandwich Invitational was pretty much the best place to have sandwiches from all around Portland. The price tag for entry was a little high, but it was very roomy at the event with few lines that I had to wait in for more than 5 minutes. If you were serious about getting your money’s worth, you definitely could’ve satiated yourself to gluttonous proportions.
